Masai Mara National Park — August 2024

The visit to Masai Mara was planned to coincide with the wildebeest migration and spend as much time as possible deep in Mara and close to potential migratory river crossings. I was with two guides from Day2Day Safaris (please contact me for more information). On arrival in Nairobi we stayed one night at Eka hotel and en-route to Masai Mara two nights at Naivasha Country Club and one night at Lake Nakuru Lodge). Just outside the gates of Masai Mara I stayed at Oldarpoi Camp, entering the  park just after 6:00am at Sekenani Gate, followed by five nights at Naibor Camp and the last night at Jambo Camp just outside Masai Mara after exiting at Oloolaimutia Gate. It is common for visitors to overnight just outside Masai Mara as accommodation costs and park fees escalate significantly when overnighting within Masai Mara proper.

The direct route  from Sekenani Gate to Naibor camp is about 2-3 hours. With easy access to potential river-crossings our main benefit was that we had about 3 hours free from tourists (dayvisitors) entering and exiting the park gates in the morning and evening. Situated alongside the Talek river,  Naibor is a lovely camp with views across the river. On our arrival in the evening elephant and hippos could be seen from the restaurant area.

Masai Mara best experiences: River crossings were seen as well as a cheetah female with four cubs hunting with good success. Successful hunts of Thompson’s gazelle at one occasion and a reedbuck on another. I also saw one of the young cheetahs (approximately 18 months old) chase a jackal whilst the mother was on the serious business of engaging with the Thompson’s gazelles.

Best views of the river crossings were from the Mara Triangle side of the Talek river for which we needed to cross the river into the triangle area.
