KNP 2024 — 15 May – 10 June
I had a great trip in 2023 but realised that there were a few good locations that needed revisiting for some interesting photography. The Sweni hide which is located about a half hour from Satara was one of my main aims and when 6 days running were available in a perimeter bungalow at Satara during May the opportunity arose to built my vacation around that. As usual I do enjoy covering the whole of Kruger on a visit exploring a variety of vegetations and habitats as it has so much to offer. Furthermore I wanted to find and spend some time with wild dogs, photograph some elephants in the north and expand on my newly found interest in B&W photography.
My best sightings and photos came from an incident at Sweni hide where a goliath heron caught a catfish and flew to a area where it could safely deal with it without losing it. Second best was likely the approximate 5 hours I spent with wild dogs in the vicinity of Olifants Rest Camp. There were numerous good sightings and I managed, rather by accident, to get an unique photo of zebra drinking at a waterhole — their camouflage blending into each other.
I accessed Kruger from Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp which was enjoyable as I had not overnighted there since childhood.
I spent a total of 26 nights in Kruger (camp sequence: Crocodile Bridge 3; Skukuza 2; Satara 6; Mopani 2; Shingwedzi 4; Punda Maria 3; Olifants 2; Letaba 3; Skukuza 1.
Once again I requested a well appointed RAV4 from Hertz for the trip. Arriving on a Saturday afternoon instead of the usual weekday, I did a meat shopping at Kaapmuiden and groceries at the Spar in Komatipoort. I arrived relatively early and could manage a gamedrive in the vicinity of Crocodile Bridge. I was rewarded with the sighting of a lion with three cubs relaxing as the sun was setting.
